Baker Mayfield placed on the COVID-19 reserve list after close contact with a staff member that tested positi - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Baker Mayfield has been placed on the Browns’ COVID-19 reserve list after coming in contact with a staff member who tested positive, but he can be back on the practice field by Wednesday if he tests negative.

Mayfield, who has not tested positive for COVID-19, came in close contact during the bye week with the staff member who has tested positive, a source told cleveland.com. The staff member is not a coach.

Mayfield is currently in mandatory quarantine per the COVID-19 protocol, but can return to the Browns facility five days after the close contact -- which would be Wednesday -- providing he has no positive results.

The club will follow the NFL-NFLPA intensive protocol because of the positive staff member when it returns to the building from the bye on Monday, meaning players can practice and lift weights, but all meetings for coaches and players will be conducted virtually.

Here is the statement from the Browns:

“The Cleveland Browns were informed Saturday morning that a staff member tested positive for COVID-19. Contact tracing was conducted and close contacts were immediately self-isolated. When the team returns to work following the bye on Monday, it will follow the NFL-NFLPA intensive protocol. We will continue to work closely with the league and medical experts on the appropriate next steps with the health and safety of our players, coaches and staff members remaining our highest priority.”

Browns players and coaches are currently scheduled to practice on Monday, their first on-field session since they had Thursday through Sunday off for the bye. All staff members and players were required to come in each day for mandatory COVID-19 testing.

With Mayfield quarantined, Case Keenum will serve as QB1 for Monday’s practice. The players usually have Tuesday off, but must still come in for testing and treatment.

The 5-3 Browns will host the 1-6 Texans on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Kevin Stefanski had one of the false positives

It’s the first positive test for a member of the Browns organization since training camp, when Jamie Gillan and a few others tested positive. The Browns also got a scare in late August when double-digit members of the organization -- including coach Kevin Stefanski -- tested positive for the virus. But all of those tests proved to be false positives, and the Browns have remained unscatched until now.

Other teams in the AFC North, including the Steelers and Ravens, are currently dealing with positive tests.
