Nick Foles loses quarterback competition to Mitchell Trubisky - Bleeding Green Nation

Former Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles™ will be starting the 2020 NFL season on the bench. The Chicago Bears are going into Week 1 with Mitchell Trubisky as their starting quarterback, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.

This development shouldn’t really come as a surprise. The Bears always seemed likely to give Trubisky one last shot before moving on.

Foles is obviously no stranger to having success while coming off the bench. We all know he threw 27 touchdowns to just two interceptions with the Eagles in 2013 despite initially losing a quarterback competition to Michael Vick.

Foles’ quarterback coach from that season, Bill Lazor, is now the Bears’ offensive coordinator. Foles has two other notable allies in head coach Matt Nagy, his offensive coordinator on the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, and John DeFilippo, his quarterbacks coach on the Eagles in 2017.

It’s really only a matter of time until Trubisky, who isn’t very good at football (see: career 85.8 passer rating or just watch him play), struggles to the point where the coaching staff makes the change to Foles.

It’ll be interesting to see how Foles fares. He was supposed to be the answer for the Jacksonville Jaguars last year before getting hurt in Week 1. Foles regained the starting job when healthy but really struggled and got benched for 2019 sixth-round rookie Gardner Minshew.

Maybe BDN will light it up and lead the Bears to the playoffs. And maybe we’ll get to see Foles versus Carson Wentz for the first time ever.
