The New York Giants have made the signing of cornerback Ryan Lewis from their practice squad to their 53-man roster. The move comes after a costly loss to the Chicago Bears which saw both Saquon Barkley and Sterling Shepard go down due to injury.
The corresponding move was to officially place Barkley on IR with his torn ACL.
The Giants are also expected to sign running back Devonta Freeman if he passes his COVID-19 testing.
The Giants have been shuffling their cornerback position as they try to find a consistent answer opposite James Bradberry. Lewis spent eight games in 2019 with the Miami Dolphins under Patrick Graham and he brings solid size (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) to the position.
The Giants first tried to claim Lewis off of waivers from the Dolphins at the start of training camp, but lost out to the Washington Football Team who have a higher priority. New York was finally able to get him when he was waived by Washington during final cut downs and he was signed to the Giants’ practice squad on Sept. 9.
Lewis was one of two practice squad additions to the roster for Sunday’s game in Chicago, but did not play.
