  • The Mets outfielder did not turn up at the Atlanta venue, the coach said

  • Cuban-born Cespedes's whereabouts remain unknown

New York Mets star Yoenis Cespedes has gone missing, failing to show up at the Atlanta Braves stadium for Sunday's game and leaving the team unable to contact him.

Brodie Van Wagenen, the Mets' general manager, who represented Cespedes when he was an agent, announced on Sunday afternoon that the 34-year-old had failed to show up to the ballpark.

'He did not reach out to management with any explanation for his absence,' Van Wagenen said in a statement released by the team shortly after the game started.

'Our attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful.'

The Cuban-born player last played for the team on Saturday night, losing the second of their four-game series to the Braves.

They will play them again on Monday in the final game of the series, then on Tuesday play the Washington Nationals.

Baseball reporters said their sources were telling them that Cespedes was not in danger.

'Mets have learned they have no reason to believe Cespedes’ safety is at risk, according to a source with knowledge of the situation,' tweeted Ken Rosenthal, Fox's MLB correspondent.

Anthony DiComo, Mets reporter for MLB.com, tweeted: 'Word from the Mets is the team, as of this moment, has no reason to believe Yoenis Céspedes' safety is at risk.'

Cespedes, a highly-paid outfielder, has missed much of the last two seasons.

The list of reasons for his absences ranged from undergoing surgery on both heels during one off-season, to injuring his right ankle during a fall at his Florida ranch during his rehabilitation.

The Mets acquired Cespedes from the Tigers just before the trade deadline in 2015 and he took the team to the World Series.

That off-season, he signed a three-year contract worth $75 million to remain a Met.

He exercised his opt-out clause the next winter after hitting 31 home runs and 86 R.B.I.
