How Alabama players joined movement to save the college football season - AL.com

There’s been very little chatter coming from the Alabama football program as this most unusual preseason chugged along. There have been no interviews with players since the Citrus Bowl and few have posted to social media since returning to campus in June.

Some of that changed Sunday night as a player-led movement to save the college football season involved Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris. ESPN reported Harris was among the dozen or so players on a zoom call with big names from the Power 5 conferences organized to craft a unified statement on the 2020 season.

Under the Twitter hashtags #WeAreUnited and #WeWantToPlay, the statement spelled out the desire to play the season, establish universal health care standards and ultimately to establish a College Football Players Association.

By 11:13 p.m. CT, Harris posted the graphic on Twitter that listed their positions. Other stars posted the same message including Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard. The hashtag #WeWantToPlay was trending late night nationwide. It was No. 1 on Twitter at midnight in Birmingham followed by #LetThemPlay.

A few of Harris’ Alabama teammates posted the hashtag Monday morning including Emil Ekiyor and Kendall Randolph.

Former Alabama player Ronnie Harrison was also outspoken on the matter. Current defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis responded to one of Harrison’s posts.

Other Alabama players like Evan Neal and Byron Young shared posts from others related to the discussion over the 2020 season.

On the staff side, new director of sports science posted his thoughts on the coronavirus. Matt Rhea had a two-post thread and a follow up.
