Looking back at Bayern’s destruction of Barcelona

Yesterday, Bayern Munich handed Barcelona one of the biggest beat downs in the history of the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds. Minus a brief hiccup on either side of the David Alaba own goal, Bayern dominated the match in one of the club’s most impressive displays.

The match, quite frankly, was incredible to see. In the past, specifically the 2012/13 Champions League, we witnessed Bayern really take it to elite teams over two games. This, however, was an 8-2 shellacking of one of Europe’s historically great sides in a single match. Just marvelous.

If you’re in the US, there’s a 16 minute highlight package below from CBS Sports. Enjoy.

UCL Semifinal will have three coaches from one nation for first time ever (Kicker)

With Bayern Munich punching their ticket for the UEFA Champions League Semifinal, this year’s competition touched a new record. For the first time ever, three coaches from the same country will lead clubs into the final four.

Germany will be represented by Bayern’s Hansi Flick, Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Tuchel, and RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann.

Bayern Frauen prep for final pre-Champions League friendly (FCBayern.de)

On Saturday, Bayern Frauen play their last friendly ahead of a return to the Champions League. The match against Slavia Prague, unfortunately, won’t be streamed anywhere.

Unfortunately for Bayern, both goalkeeper Laura Benkarth and her top deputy Carina Schlüter will be out of action due to injuries in this one. Klara Bühl has returned to training, but she is still recovering from her shoulder surgery and won’t be available for games until early September.

Next Saturday, Bayern will take on Lyon in the Champions League Quarterfinal in Bilbao.

Quarterfinals:

Glasgow City vs. Wolfsburg
Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona
Arsenal vs. Paris Saint-Germain
Lyon vs. Bayern Munich

After days of rumors, Freiburg confirmed the transfer of Luca Waldschmidt to Benfica. In two seasons with Freiburg, the 24 year old notched 16 goals and 6 assists and also earned his senior team debut with Germany.

The fee was expected to be around €12 million, according to Bild.

Former Bayern right back Rafinha is making a return to Europe (T-Online)

Rafinha will be returning to Europe after only one season with Flamengo back in his native Brazil due to growing concerns about Brazil’s inept COVID-19 response. Reportedly, he’ll be joining legendary Greek club Olympiakos on a free transfer despite having a contract through 2021. The reason? Rafinha has an out-clause in his contract that allows him to move abroad on a free.

You will, however, recall that Rafinha and Flamengo won the Copa Libertadores during his year there putting him in some rarefied air.

Wolfsburg Frauen coach Stephan Lerch will leave the club after this season (DFB)

Wolfsburg Frauen have announced that head coach Stephan Lerch will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the current season. He is, as they say, in search of new opportunities.

Lerch is the second Wolfsburg coach since the club went on their wildly impressive run beginning in the 2012/13 season under Ralf Kellerman, who left the club in 2017. Under Kellerman, Wolfsburg won the Champions League 2 times, the Bundesliga 3 times, and the DFB Pokal 4 times. Since Lerch took over in the summer of 2017, Wolfsburg have won the Bundesliga 3 times and the DFB Pokal 3 times.

Wolfsburg are still in the Champions League this season with an easier route to a potential final than Bayern Munich.
