Top-ranked quarterback Caleb Williams commits to Oklahoma - 247Sports

For the second time in the last three recruiting cycles the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the Top247 commits to Oklahoma, as Washington (DC) Gonzaga five-star signal-caller Caleb Williams announced his college plans to play in Norman Saturday evening. He did so live with 247Sports on CBS Sports HQ.

"I felt that was the place for me overall," Williams said.

Lincoln Riley and the Sooners beat out LSU and Maryland for the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Williams who also strongly considered Georgia, Penn State and Clemson earlier in the process.

“Their track record with their past three quarterbacks they had,” Williams recently said of OU. “Second round, backup for two years to first pick (Kyler Murray) and you’ve got Baker Mayfield, he won a Heisman and they were all great passers. Look at the stats.

“That’s straight directly towards Coach Riley. He’s an offensive mastermind type guy and I love that with me being a quarterback. His last three guys have been in the last four chairs of the Heisman.”

Tabbed by the 247Sports Composite as the nation’s No. 4 prospect overall, Williams will join a quarterback room that also include Spencer Rattler who was the No. 1 signal-caller in the 2019 class.

Williams has been to Norman a handful of times including a trip in the spring, and the bond with Riley was the difference in this recruitment.

“Riley is super smart man,” Carl Williams, Caleb’s dad said. “He’s doing skull sessions with Caleb on a weekly basis. They talk all the time. He’s just really good at that. And he’s personable too. A lot of these places they try to develop relationships but he’s just better at it than a lot of places.

“They’re meticulous attention to detail was outstanding. I shared our spreadsheet with them, the template and they got a feeling for how we think about the process and what was important to us and they were spot on in every category. And the willingness to be open with us about their process, how things worked and it was really good.”

As a junior Williams threw for 19 touchdowns and rushed for 18 more playing against some of the best competition in the country. He will cap his prep career playing in the All-American Bowl. Like Rattler two years ago, this past week Williams was crowned the Elite 11 Finals MVP. 247Sports National Analyst Charles Power compares Williams game to that of Russell Wilson.

“Has a developed, thick build,” Power wrote in his evaluation. “Tested as a top athlete prior to his junior season with strong marks across the board, including a sub 4.6 second time in the 40-yard dash. Pairs that athleticism with one of the stronger arms in the 2021 cycle. Is highly creative with the ability to make difficult individual plays in off-script situations. Has unique arm dexterity and can deliver strikes from multiple platforms. Just as comfortable throwing on the move as in the pocket and does not need to set his feet to deliver a well thrown ball. Extremely tough for defenders to corral both in the pocket and the open field. Runs with a natural body lean and slips out of tackles at a high rate. Has the ability to pull away from defenders once in the open field. Offers scheme versatility with experience playing under center but the skill set to be a potent playmaker in an uptempo, spread offense. Battle-tested against tough competition. Is the most talented quarterback prospect to come from the Mid-Atlantic region in a decade. Projects as a multi-year impact starter at the Power Five level with the upside to first round if not top ten pick in the NFL Draft.”

Williams pledge makes him the jewel of this 2021 Oklahoma recruiting class that has gone from No. 32 to No. 14 on this with Top247 cornerback Latrell McCutchin also announcing for the Sooners earlier in the day.
