Long-term deal for Chris Jones described as 50-50 chance - Arrowhead Pride

The Kansas City Chiefs and their defensive tackle Chris Jones have until 3 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Wednesday to conclude a long-term deal. Without one, one of two things will happen: Jones will play the 2020 season on the $16.1 million franchise tender he received in March, or opt to sit out some (or all) of the season.

If you’d like to see Jones with the Chiefs beyond 2020, there is good news. On Saturday, it was reported that Jones and the team are talking about a long-term deal — something that according to some reports had not occurred since the tag was tendered in March.

That report has now been at least partially confirmed by 610Sports morning host Bob Fescoe, who said at the opening of his Tuesday show that “someone close to the situation” told him on Monday night that “it’s a 50-50 proposition” that a deal would be signed before the Wednesday deadline.

Fescoe reported that the two sides were planning to continue negotiations on Tuesday.

Another indicator has come in from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Fescoe also said that according to the same source, whether or not Jones would play on the tag would come down to “how much money he’s saved.” While we obviously don’t know how much money Jones has in his bank account (feel free to follow as many bank tellers on Twitter as you can find), we can tell you that he’s earned $6.2 million over his four-year career with the Chiefs.

While Fescoe’s report isn’t a definitive answer about Jones’ state of mind with regard to playing without a new deal, it could be interpreted as a positive development; it would be bad news if the source had said that Jones was determined not to play on the tag.

Unnamed sources aside, there’s one thing we still know: 14 NFL players — including Jones — were given franchise or transition tags in March. With one day to go until the deadline for new contracts, none of them have yet been signed to a long-term deal.
