Jorge Masvidal, Israel Adesanya named cover athletes of EA Sports UFC 4 - MMA Fighting

Jorge Masvidal and Israel Adesanya will be the official cover athletes for the upcoming EA Sports UFC 4 video game.

They join fellow fighters Jon Jones, Alexander Gustafsson, Conor McGregor, and Ronda Rousey as UFC fighters to appear on the box art of the popular franchise.

“I am the face of the new wave of UFC fighters, so it feels right to represent the sport on this new generation UFC game,” said Adesanya in a press release. “I look forward to my fans playing as me as much as I have enjoyed playing as myself.”

New features fans can expect from the latest game include: an overhauled career mode; takedown mechanics and a submission system; commentary from Daniel Cormier and Jon Anik; and new fighting environments such as the UFC APEX, “The Backyard,” “Action Avenue” and “The Kumite” arena from the the movie Bloodsport.

“MMA is more than about the belt. It’s about who you are as a person and the determination that drives a fighter to go from unknown to selling out arenas all over the world,” added Masvidal. “I grew up backyard fighting so it’s exciting for me to see that style of fighting come to UFC 4 where players can bring out their Gamebred mentality.”

The entire game is expected to hit shelves and digital platforms on Aug. 14.

In addition to new fight mechanics and environments, boxing champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will be available as a pre-order bonus.

“Fighting is what I have dedicated myself to,” stated Joshua in a press release. “No matter the stage or opponent, I’ll always back myself. My character in UFC 4 will be no different. I’m ready for any challenge and hope we’ve made something in UFC 4 that can get fight fans excited this year.”

“I have a lot of respect for the UFC fighters but I’m the greatest fighter in the world.” added Fury. “It’s going to be exciting to watch players use my boxing skills to outshine the most talented MMA fighters in UFC 4.”

Joshua and Fury will also be available through gameplay and can only be unlocked once.

Other pre-order bonuses include Backyard and Kumite customization packs.

As for UFC 4’s availability on new generation consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, EA Creative Director Brian Hayes said the possibility has yet to be determined

“If both consoles support backwards compatibility for Gen 4 games then, presumably, fans will be able to play UFC 4 on their Gen 5 consoles,” Hayes stated. “We haven’t yet had an opportunity to test this out and determine whether any additional development work is required to leverage Backward Compatibility, but we hope to see UFC 4 playable on Gen 5 hardware using that feature.”

In terms of real octagon competition from the cover athletes, Masvidal (35-13) is set to challenge reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC 251 in Abu Dhabi. The man known as “Gamebred” has rattled off three consecutive stoppage wins over Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz, the latter of which earned him the UFC’s “BMF” title.

Adesanya (19-0), the UFC’s reigning middleweight champion, most recently defended his title with a decision win over Yoel Romero at UFC 243 in March. This win kept intact “The Last Stylebender’s” perfect record, and it pushed his UFC winning streak to eight. He also holds notable wins over Robert Whittaker, Kelvin Gastelum, Derek Brunson and Anderson Silva.

While nothing is official, Adesanya is expected to put his title on the line against fellow undefeated fighter Paulo Costa later this year.
