Alabama’s 2021 recruiting surge continues, this time with the addition of four-star linebacker Kendrick Blackshire, who announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on Tuesday evening over LSU and Texas A&M. Blackshire, a product of Duncanville (Texas), is commitment No. 12 for Nick Saban and company, a pledge that boosts the Tide into the top 10 of the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.
“I feel like they’re going to get me prepared better than anyone,” Blackshire told BamaOnLine of why he's committing to the Tide. “I feel like their training staff, that alone, will get my knee prepared for whatever I need to do in college. Just get prepared for the game. That’s a real strong reason why I chose Alabama because of their training staff and Nick Saban. He’s a defensive coach. They’re the one.”
Blackshire came to the realization that he wanted to commit to UA while out to eat one night.
“Man, I was actually at a restaurant while I committed,” he said. “I thought about it. I was like, it’s Alabama. I’ll be honest before I even thought about Alabama, I was thinking of a whole ‘nother school in my head. But at that moment I knew it was Alabama.”
The four-star linebacker called Saban to share the news.
“He was excited. He was,” Blackshire said. “There was a smile on his face. He was happy.”
Blackshire’s area recruiter is special teams and tight ends coach Jeff Banks. He played a major role in the Texas native picking the Tide.
“He’s real,” Blackshire said. “Banks is a real one, for real. I can call Banks at any time and he’s going to talk to me about whatever. Banks is that man, for real.”
The Top247 ‘backer is ready to get to the next level. He will enroll early next January.
“They fly around,” he said of the Tide. “They win. We do what we need to do to win. That’s it.”
Blackshire plans to take on a recruiter role for the Tide. He’s already been talking to all of UA’s commits.
“Whoever I can get,” he said. “Whoever they tell me to recruit I’m recruiting.”
At 6-foot-2, 245 pounds, Blackshire is rated the No. 7 inside linebacker and the No. 152 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.
Blackshire missed his junior season with an ACL injury, Prior to 2019, he racked up 180 tackles as a freshman and sophomore at Mesquite (Texas) Horn before making the move to Duncanville.
The Lone Star State standout is the fourth linebacker to commit to UA, joining Mobile native Deontae Lawson, South Florida product Dallas Turner, and Prattville star Ian Jackson.
