On April 7, the Oklahoma State head coach held a teleconference to talk about responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. He made a litany of missteps on the call, from suggesting a May 1 return to campus in order to “run money through the state of Oklahoma” to calling COVID-19 the “Chinese virus” to recommending conspiracy-spreading news outlets. The backlash was swift and loud. Gundy was roundly roasted for his tone-deaf commentary on that Tuesday. His response? A brief statement emailed out four days later on a Saturday afternoon.
“I have been made aware that comments from my press conference have offended some. It was never my intention to offend anyone and I apologize. My first priority is and will always be the student-athletes and doing what is best for the program and the university.”
His critics called it pointless. His defenders called it unnecessary.
