It was just over two months ago when Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy suggested college football players should be rushed back to campus amid the coronavirus, in part to help the state’s economy.
Gundy’s cavalier remarks are commonplace, and he brushes aside criticism like a poor-form tackle.
But Monday’s stern admonishment came from within, as star running back Chuba Hubbard lashed out after a photo surfaced of Gundy wearing an OAN T-shirt. One America News is a far-right news network that has been known to promote conspiracy theories, and even has had one host call the Black Lives Matter movement a “farce.”
The social media support for Hubbard from his Cowboys teammates quickly swelled, and by the afternoon Oklahoma State AD Mike Holder released a statement saying the comments from players were “a grave concern.”
By early Monday evening, Hubbard and Gundy appeared in a video message together on Twitter. It was only the first-team All-American who did the apologizing, saying he should have addressed his coach directly.
“In light of today’s tweet with the T-shirt that I was wearing, I met with some players and realize it’s a very sensitive issue with what’s going on in today’s society,” Gundy said in the video. “And so, we had a great meeting. (I was) made aware of some things that players feel like can make our organization, our culture even better than it is here at Oklahoma State. I’m looking forward to making some changes, and it starts at the top with me. And we’ve got good days ahead.”
After the video was released, Oklahoma State players said they would not boycott workouts.
And when some voiced concern over a lack of a solution, Hubbard later tweeted: “No don’t get it twisted. Foots still on the gas. Results are coming. It’s not over.”
