MLB players say they're ready for 2020 season after latest union response to owners - CBS Sports

Watch Now: MLB Makes New Proposal To MLBPA To Restart Season (7:10)

The Sisyphean task of negotiating a proper deal between MLB owners and players has reached its natural conclusion: a bitter stalemate. On Saturday, the Major League Baseball Players Association announced that it would reject the latest proposal from ownership to begin the 2020 season.

This response came one day before the league-imposed deadline of Sunday. The owner's proposal itself was for a 72-game season at 80 percent prorated pay that was submitted on Friday. It also included a scathing letter that drew frustrations and a host of sarcastic responses from players.

Unlike previous proposals that ownership threw the way of the players, this one seemed to be a final straw for the MLBPA. Executive director Tony Clark issued a statement saying "it appears further dialogue with the league would be futile," which isn't to say that the union is backing down, but more that it appears to be hinting at holding onto this frustration for future negotiations -- namely the CBA which expires in December 2021.

The message from the player's union was loud and clear: the players want to play. Players want to be told when, and where to go so that the season can finally start, which is the message that many shared on Twitter Saturday after the news of this rejection dropped.
