David Luiz leaves Gary Neville speechless, while Piers Morgan thanks referee on Twitter for sending Arsenal - talkSPORT.com

David Luiz’s hopes of earning a new contract at Arsenal took a hit in the defeat to Manchester City.

The defender only played 25 minutes of his club’s first match of the Premier League, but unfortunately for the Gunners faithful, City benefited from his contributions a lot more as they recorded an easy 3-0 win.

The Brazilian entered the fray on 24 minutes when compatriot Pablo Mari suffered an injury, with Arsenal drawing at the Etihad at that point.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side found themselves a goal down at half time when Raheem Sterling smashed in a ball that somehow went straight through Luiz.

But things got much worse for Luiz at the start of the second half.  He gave away a penalty after Riyad Mahrez managed to get goal side of him and to add insult to injury, referee Anthony Taylor sent him off.

Kevin De Bruyne stuck the resulting spot-kick away to put Arsenal 2-0 down and with little hope of salvaging anything at the Etihad Stadium.

Commenting on the incident which led to Luiz’s dismissal, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville – never shy of an opinion – simply said: “I have no words.”

Meanwhile, lifelong Arsenal fan Piers Morgan sarcastically thanked the referee for removing Luiz from the match.

This is the fourth penalty Luiz has given away since joining Arsenal last summer and his future at the club looks very uncertain.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season and Arsenal could let him go in a bid to cut costs at the club amid the economic effects of the coronavirus crisis.

However, Luiz’s agent recently told talkSPORT the player wants to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium.

“He has very much enjoyed his time there, especially since Mikel has arrived. It looks like they have a very clear plan on how they want to take the club to the next level,” Kia Joorabchian said.

On the possibility of him staying he said: “What’s happened is that David had a contract with Arsenal and during the pandemic there has been no discussions about contracts, renewals or anything.

“We haven’t discussed that contract and we always agreed that the most important thing at the moment is to get football back and finishing the current season, that is a very important step to stake as the first step.

“David signed a one-year contract with the option to extend and unfortunately the option to extend happened right in the middle of the pandemic.”

But this red card will see Luiz miss at least one match so he’ll have less time to prove himself at a club that has still not decided whether to keep him on or not.
