We might remember that before the pandemic, Chelsea took on mighty Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge and were roundly outclassed to the tune of 3-0 in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
While that scoreline means that the tie is practically over, our chance at a miracle comeback in a second leg remains alive thanks to UEFA rescheduling the rest of this season’s European competitions for August.
As announced yesterday, the remaining (full) rounds of the Champions League will be shortened to single-legged affairs and they will get played out tournament-style in Lisbon, Portugal in the space of just eleven days, August 12-23. Prior to that, the remaining four Round of 16 second legs will be conducted as well.
Teams already in the quarterfinals include PSG, Atalanta, RB Leipzig, and Atlético Madrid. Four more will join them: the aggregate winners of Manchester City vs. Real Madrid, Juventus vs. Lyon, Barcelona vs. Napoli, and Bayern vs. Chelsea. Those four second leg games will take place August 7-8, either at the home team’s stadium or a neutral venue in Portugal.
No fans will be allowed at any of those games of course. (The Europa League will follow a similar concept, but will be played out in Germany.)
Chelsea are currently set to finish the Premier League season by the end of July. Meanwhile, the FA Cup final is set for August 1, should we make it that far. By then, Chelsea will probably be allowed to make signings, though those new arrivals (Ziyech, Werner, maybe more?) won’t be eligible to play in 2019-20 competitions.
