Major League Baseball held the first round of its annual amateur draft on Wednesday night. The Detroit Tigers took Arizona State infielder Spencer Torkelson with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, but there were plenty of surprises in the early going. Twenty-nine picks were made during Wednesday's first round, as the Astros were stripped of their first- and second-round picks as punishment for electronic sign-stealing.
The 2020 draft is a two-day event that will continue Thursday with 123 more picks. MLB shortened the draft from 40 rounds to five rounds this year in a cost-cutting move amid the coronavirus pandemic.
We here at CBS Sports provided instant analysis of all 29 first-round picks as the selections are announced. Check out a breakdown of each first-round pick below and a full list of the 37 picks made Wednesday night.
