Steve Spurrier will return to coaching in the Alliance of American Football, a new spring league set to launch in February 2019.
Spurrier, who turns 73 later this month, has been out of coaching since 2015, when he resigned midway through his 11th season at South Carolina. He has recently been working in an ambassadorial role at Florida, his alma mater.
Spurrier will coach the franchise in Orlando, which will allow him to maintain his position at Florida. In addition to coaching stops at Duke, Florida, South Carolina and with the NFL's Washington Redskins, Spurrier was head coach of the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits from 1983-85.
The AAF will feature eight teams, with 50-man rosters. The league -- which has a broadcast contract with CBS Sports -- will play an 10-game regular-season schedule, culminating in a championship game in late April.
The AAF is the brainchild of television and film director Charlie Ebersol, the son of former TV executive Dick Ebersol. Former NFL executive Bill Polian and such former star players as Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, Jared Allen and Justin Tuck will be involved in the league on the administrative level.
Other AAF franchises and coaches will be announced later.
