ROUND 1 (2): QB Sam Darnold, USC
If the Giants have Darnold, running back Saquon Barkley and defensive end Bradley Chubb to choose from, Gettleman will feel like kid in a toy store around Christmas: So many good choices, how could you go wrong?
Of course, that is where Gettleman is going to need to rely on — to borrow one of his words — "conviction." That same kid in a toy store also can be overcome by indecisiveness and fear of failure when given too many desirable options.
Darnold is the closest thing to Eli Manning among the quarterbacks in the draft: From his unflappable team-first personality all the way through his too-high number of giveaways (20 in his last 20 games). He is only 20 years old, so sitting behind Manning for a full season — the old school way of grooming a quarterback — is no big deal.
Others considered/Just missed
Others considered (QBs only): Josh Rosen UCLA; Josh Allen, Wyoming
Just missed: Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma
