Michael Irvin says Dez Bryant's 'fighter' mentality was too much for Cowboys

Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin said that Dez Bryant was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Friday because he struggled to channel his "fighter" mentality once he felt that he did not fully connect with players loyal to coach Jason Garrett.

Irvin told the NFL Network in an interview Monday that the Cowboys likely assessed the situation with Bryant as: "At this point, we'll just move on because the fighting is not directed in the right places."

"What happens is when he gets in these situations, he does what he knows how to do: He fights," Irvin said. "If you're not careful with how you speak to him and how you speak with him, he ends up fighting everybody and anybody and even fighting some of the people that are trying to help him. ... It got a little bad off the football field with Dez fighting to get back where he wants to be and where he belongs, and he was fighting even the people trying to help."

Bryant had previously said that select players — whom he referred to as "Garrett guys" in an interview on Friday — played a part in his release from the organization.

"I've talked to Dez about all the Garrett guys before," Irvin told NFL Network. "We've had conversations about it. He was kind of complaining to me that all these Garrett guys, everybody does not mesh well with everybody in the locker room.

"And I said, 'Dez, that's not everybody's job. You have come from a long way so you'll have an opportunity to relate to everybody on the spectrum and that's your job, to relate to everybody on this spectrum on this football team. ... don't expect everybody to have the connectivity you do. Do what you have to do and don't worry about everyone else.'"

In 2017, Bryant had 66 receptions for 814 yards and six touchdowns. Compare that to 1,320 yards on 88 receptions and 16 TDs in 2014.

Irvin had previously told reporters that the Cowboys would be "headed towards another dumb, ignorant season" if they cut Bryant because receivers of his caliber "don't grow on trees."
