Masters Par-3 Contest: Do players really want to win it or does superstition play a role?

SportsPulse: Masters week is upon us and everyone is asking the same question: Can Tiger actually win? Our Nancy Armour breaks down Tiger's chances and who appears to be primed to stand in his way. USA TODAY Sports

USA TODAY surveyed 33 players, including eight who have won the green jacket, about the Masters and Augusta National Golf Club, a powerful combination that leaves lasting memories. Here's what they had to say about the Par-3 Contest, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

Given the curse of the Par-3 Contest -- no player who has won the annual tournament on the short course has gone on to win the green jacket in the same year -- do you want to win the Par-3 Contest?

"Absolutely not. One year, I birdied five of my first six holes and then hit three balls into the water on purpose. My dad was so angry with me he wanted to strangle me.” – Andy North

“Heck yeah. That’s still something to brag about. I’d be telling everyone that I won the Masters. But then in the small print there would be the Par 3 Contest.” – Kevin Na

“I want to win everything there. I would love to win the Par 3 Contest and the Masters. Am I superstitious? For sure. But every curse gets broken. I’m a Boston Red Sox fan, so I know all about curses and how they end.” – Billy Horschel

“I was talking with Padraig Harrington about superstitions, and he told me he goes out of his way to break superstitions and he said he’s won the Par 3 Contest three times. I said that was interesting and then asked him if he’d won the green jacket. He nodded no, and I said well maybe they’re on to something there with that superstition.” – Graeme McDowell

“Probably not, considering history says otherwise. I didn’t try to win it the first year I played.” – Daniel Berger

“Hell yeah. I’ll take any crystal they’ve got there.” – Pat Perez

“No, I don’t want to win it.” – Tiger Woods

“One year I was standing on the ninth tee and I thought about it. But I never tried not to win it.” – David Duval

“Heck yeah. If I can get my name on anything on that piece of property is a great feat. I’d love the accomplishment of winning the Par 3 and then trying to break the hex.”  --Charley Hoffman

“It’s unlikely I’ll win the main event again, so yes, I’ll take it. I might as well get my name on as many of those fountains as possible.” – Trevor Immelman

“Yes. I think it would be fun to break the hex and fun to have that experience of winning the Par 3 contest. That would be a great double.” – Phil Mickelson

“I’d love to be the only one to win both. And anytime you can earn some crystal, you want to earn crystal. So every time I go out there I’m trying to win.” – Jordan Spieth

“It would be nice to break that so-called curse. And if you win the Par 3 Contest, your wedge game is in pretty good shape, so that’s a good thing.” – Rory McIlroy

“Sure. The year I won the Masters I finished second in the Par 3 Contest. And I missed a putt to get in a playoff. Shoot, I’d love to win it. It’s crystal.” – Zach Johnson

“Absolutely. You want to put your name on a trophy as much as you possibly can.” – Wesley Bryan

“No. I believed in the hex. Look at what I did to Raymond Floyd. He had won the Par 3 contest and then I beat him in the playoff in the Masters.” – Nick Faldo

“I’d like to win anything there.” – Steve Stricker

“No. I really don’t play. I let my daughter play half the holes.” – Kevin Kisner

“If they’re giving crystal away that says you won something at Augusta National, I want to win it. So, yes, are you kidding me?” – William McGirt

“Absolutely. I’ll beat that hex.” – Gary Woodland

“No. Someone is eventually going to break the hex, but it’s not going to be me.” – Brandt Snedeker

“In 2011, when I was No. 1 in the world, it was an absolute goal of mine to win both. And I won the Par 3 that year and then finished fourth in the Masters. I was close. So, yes, I want to win both. I want to debunk that myth.” – Luke Donald

“No. I want to finish second. I’ll dump one into the water on the last hole.” – Mac Hughes

“No. Looking back at it, though, to think that was stupid. What chance did I have of winning the actual tournament? I should have been grinding it out on Wednesday trying to win on the Par 3 course.” – Justin Leonard
