CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Hornets have relieved Steve Clifford as head coach, according to a news release from the team.
Clifford coached five seasons with the Hornets. He lead the team to the playoffs twice in his first four seasons.
The move was not unexpected as the Hornets recently hired Mitch Kupchak as its president of basketball operations and general manager.
"I want to thank Coach Clifford for his contributions to the Hornets,” stated Kupchak in a news release Friday. “I know he has worked incredibly hard on behalf of the organization and we wish him the best moving forward. The search for a new coach will begin immediately.”
Clifford finished with a regular-season record of 196-214. The Hornets finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 36-46 record.
