The Eagles currently still have Carson Wentz on their roster, but that isn’t stopping Jalen Hurts from taking a bigger leadership role this offseason, particularly with some of his young teammates. The second-year quarterback is reportedly planning a workout with some of his receivers in the coming weeks.
Hosting wide receivers was something Carson Wentz did early in his career and is really an important part of creating the special chemistry and rapport needed among the offensive skill players — something that was very obviously missing in 2020.
The official word from new head coach Nick Sirianni is that he has two great quarterbacks on the roster, but it was too early to discuss a starting quarterback when he gave his introductory press conference. Weeks later, and among more than a few reports of an impending trade for Wentz (and his huge contract), it looks like Hurts is taking the reigns. This shouldn’t be surprising as the son of a coach, and someone whose leadership was touted throughout his college career and even during his rookie season in Philly.
Wentz trade talks have cooled in the days following the Super Bowl, so while it’s not likely he stays with the Eagles, it’s not a done deal just yet. It’s also not a guarantee that should the team trade Wentz that Hurts is the next in line — Howie Roseman could always bring in another experienced QB from around the league, or even draft someone with their No. 6 pick.
Still, it’s good to see Hurts taking some initiative and working to build some cohesion among the offense.
