Avalanche vs. Golden Knights delay: NHL postpones Lake Tahoe outdoor game, will restart at midnight ET - CBSSports.com

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught the sports world to expect the unexpected and that's exactly what happened on Saturday. After one period of play between the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights at Lake Tahoe, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman joined the NBC broadcast and announced that the game was being postponed until midnight ET/9 p.m. PT on Saturday as a result of unsafe ice conditions.

The bright sun on the clear day caused issues throughout the first period as several players and even a referee lost their footing on slushy ice. After the first period concluded, officials made an attempt to work with the ice and covered sections of it with tarps in an effort to keep the sun off of it. Normally, an 18-minute intermission clock begins to count down when teams will return to the dressing room between periods, but that never started as a result of the ice issues.  

Prior to this announcement, the league revealed that Sunday's Lake Tahoe game between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers was being postponed until 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT as a result of the weather issues. The Bruins and Flyers were scheduled to play at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.

During the first period, the Avalanche opened the scoring with a goal from defenseman Samuel Girard thanks to a beautiful pass from Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche really had their fair share of chances in the opening period as they held a 17-7 advantage in shots. However, Colorado failed to score on its lengthy 5-on-3 power play late in the period. Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury really came up huge for his team as he stopped Mikko Rantanen at point-blank range just before the horn sounded.
