Arte Moreno, owner of the Anaheim Angels, killed the trade that was going to send Joc Pederson from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Angels, per Ken Rosenthal on Twitter. Rosenthal says that Moreno “grew impatient” after the deal was delayed due to issues finalizing the Mookie Betts/David Price trade with the Boston Red Sox and pulled the deal.
As has been discussed at length the last week, the Dodgers and Red Sox had a big, three-team trade agreed to that was sending Betts and Price to the Dodgers, with Los Angeles sending Kenta Maeda to the Minnesota Twins, and the Twins sending pitcher Brusdar Graterol to the Red Sox. In anticipation of that deal, the Dodgers and Angels agreed to a swap that would have sent outfielder Joc Pederson, pitcher Ross Stripling, and a prospect to the Angels for infielder Luis Rengifo and a prospect or two.
When the Red Sox balked over Graterol’s medicals, however, the Betts deal stalled as the teams worked to figure out how to make a deal that would satisfy all parties. That put the Pederson deal — which the Dodgers weren’t going to do if they weren’t getting Betts and Price — on hold.
A revised version of the Betts trade was reportedly agreed to yesterday, but the delay apparently irritated Moreno enough that the Angels aren’t doing their part of the trade. Its odd for an owner to step in like this, but Moreno has a history of being hands-on in regards to certain player transactions — most recently, with the Anthony Rendon signing this past winter.
I would suspect the Dodgers will still try to move Pederson, who is somewhat superfluous at this point, and is in his final season before being eligible for free agency. He’s a really good platoon bat rather than a full time guy, but he would fit on a number of teams, though not really the Rangers, since Joc Pederson is not a center fielder.
