Here is the ideal coaching staff Giants’ Joe Judge should hire - NJ.com

The Giants believe they hired a rising star in newly Joe Judge, but as a rookie head coach, surrounding Judge with a strong staff of assistants is paramount.

When the Philadelphia Eagles hired Doug Pederson as head coach in 2016, general manager Howie Roseman played a significant role in hiring Frank Reich as offensive coordinator and Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator. Reports suggest Judge will be allowed to hire his own staff, but the Giants would be wise to follow Roseman and the Eagles’ blueprint.

Reich had previous play calling experience and proved instrumental in helping Pederson develop game plans and script the first 15 plays in late night meetings the night before games. Schwartz’s head coaching experience was also helpful in allowing Pederson to focus almost exclusively on the offense and rookie quarterback Carson Wentz.

Here’s a look at what Judge’s ideal first staff for the Giants would look like:

Offensive coordinator: Jim Caldwell

The Giants need to surround Judge with seasoned coordinators, particularly on offense, given the importance of hastening quarterback Daniel Jones’ development as he enters his second season and the amount of resources the Giants have on that side of the ball.

Caldwell, 64, is currently the Miami Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach. He has head coaching experience with the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-2011, and the Detroit Lions from 2014-2017. As John Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator, Caldwell called the plays in the Baltimore Ravens’ 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.

With an extensive experience as a play-caller and strong leadership skills, Caldwell has the track record and clout to have input over the Giants’ scheme, shepherd Jones through his pivotal first NFL offseason and maximize the impact of running back Saquon Barkley, wide receivers Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard, tight end Evan Engram, etc.

Quarterbacks coach: Joe Brady

Brady is widely considered budding offensive guru, in large part because of his work with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow as LSU’s passing game coordinator.

Burrow’s success, combined with Brady’s youth likely make him relatable to Jones, who spent last season learning from Giants offensive coordinator Mike Shula, and backup quarterbacks Eli Manning and Alex Tanney.

Brady was instrumental in dragging LSU’s offenses out from the stone ages and implementing no-huddle and spread concepts this season, which would certainly get the most out of the Giants’ offense but also take advantage of Jones’ mobility and ability to make throws on the run.

Burrow completed 77 percent of his passes for 5,208 yards with 55 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Mentioned as a front-runner for several college offensive coordinator positions, Brady, 30, took home the Art Broyles award as the nation’s top assistant coach this season.

Defensive coordinator: Kris Richard

Richard, the Dallas Cowboys’ former secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator, interviewed for the Giants’ head coaching job last week and would be a strong hire to lead Judge’s defense.

The Cowboys’ passing defense finished 10th in the NFL this season, allowing just 223.5 yards per game and Dallas’ 23 passing touchdowns allowed were the eighth fewest in the NFL.

Prior to arriving in Dallas, Richard was the Seahawks’ defensive backs coach from 2012-2014 and defensive coordinator from 2015-2017.

During his time in Seattle, Richard was the architect of the stifling Legion of Boom Secondary that sent Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Byron Maxwell and Brandon Browner to 17 Pro Bowls and delivered a Super Bowl championship and consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

Special teams coordinator: Thomas McGaughey

The Giants’ special teams have been one of the few bright spots of the past two seasons, in large part because of Thomas McGaughey’s steady hand as the coordinator.

Under McGaughey, the Giants finished in the top five in kickoff coverage, kickoff return average, and top 10 in net punting.

Judge, of course, has a strong special teams background, but would benefit from having a veteran on staff in McGaughey to guide the special teams this season and perhaps as an option to promote next season.
