Eagles News: Kellen Moore to Philadelphia? - Bleeding Green Nation

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

In Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys Get Experience and a Proven Track Record - MMQB
The other side of the ball raises more questions. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, quarterbacks coach Jon Kitna and line coach Marc Colombo all remain under contract, and Jones has intimated to candidates that, ideally, he’d like to retain Moore. It would help ease Dak Prescott’s transition through the coaching change, but my sense is that the Cowboys want to keep a coach they really, really like (not totally unlike how they invested in Jason Garrett). If Moore were to leave, I would not be surprised to see a division rival—the Eagles—take an interest in him. [BLG Note: Mike Groh replacement?]

13 final thoughts on the Eagles’ playoff loss to the Seahawks - BGN
If you needed a reminder that life’s just not fair, well, look no further than Wentz getting knocked out of his first playoff game after just four pass attempts. It’s so frustrating because he just made it though a 16-game season for the second time in his career. He proved so many doubters wrong by staying healthy and leading the Eagles to the postseason by playing great football down the stretch in December. Wentz getting playoff experience was supposed to be a big positive from this season, regardless of when the Eagles were eliminated. Jadeveon Clowney robbed fans of that silver lining by lauching his helmet into the back of Wentz’s head.

Ranking the Eagles’ 2020 offseason needs from most glaring to most stable - PhillyVoice
The team should be doing everything they can to trade Alshon Jeffery so that the painful dead money hit he leaves in his wake is minimized. If that means that Jeffery is shipped out along with an asset such as a draft pick in order to coax another team to take on his bad contract, then that option should be on the table. But he has to go. Nelson Agholor very likely played his last game as an Eagle. The team needs to move on. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside cost a second-round pick, but he did not show enough to be viewed as some kind of long-term answer. If the Eagles are honest about their evaluation of his first year in Philly, anything that he gives them going forward should be viewed as a bonus, not an expectation.

The Morning After - Iggles Blitz
Jason Peters says he wants to keep playing. The Eagles cannot bring him back. They simply cannot do that. Peters struggled on Sunday. He’s had penalty issues this year and deals with nagging injuries. He is an all-time great Eagle, but they have to let him go. Andre Dillard needs to be the LT in 2020.

Finality of the season is here, with many questions to answer - PE.com
1. The injuries, and why and how they are happening. For three straight seasons the Eagles have been ravaged by injuries. They are a part of this game, sure, and many other teams are having the same injuries happen, but it’s something for the team to really look at and understand and improve. Is it the way the team is conditioning? Does the Training Camp plan need to be altered? Should players see more time in the preseason? Less time? Is it equipment-related? There are so many questions here. The Eagles need to find the answers and reduce the number of crippling injuries for 2020.

Eagles leaders confirm that departure of certain players led to late-season success. Are some still around? - Inquirer
Alshon Jeffery had been labeled as the source by a WIP-94.1 personality who is also an Eagles sideline reporter, but the wide receiver had previously denied any involvement. Nevertheless, several players still believed him to be behind the quotes. The receiver, meanwhile, had been producing at a level far below his norm. Various injuries had an effect, but Wentz and Jeffery continued to lack a chemistry that each has had with other receivers/quarterbacks. They had their best day in Miami despite the upset. But the following week, with the season increasingly on the line, their struggles returned against the New York Giants. Jeffery was targeted twice and caught neither before suffering a season-ending foot injury just before the half. At the time, the Eagles trailed 17-3, and their offense was ineffective. But something clicked after the break, especially for Wentz. He still had regulars like tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert and running back Miles Sanders, but former practice-squad skills-position players like Ward, Scott, and tight end Josh Perkins helped spark a dramatic comeback. And the momentum carried over into the next three games, and even Sunday. “I feel like no matter what was going on, the first 12 weeks, that Giants game, in the second half, once we got on a roll, guys really started to have fun together,” Ertz said. “There were no egos involved and we just kind of got back to the basics as a football team.”

Chris Long defends Carson Wentz against ‘injury-prone’ and ‘soft’ hot takes - NBCSP
Carson Wentz’s season ended on Sunday when Jadeveon Clowney’s helmet hit his own and forced it to subsequently hit the turf at Lincoln Financial Field. While they may be a vocal minority, there were a number of media personalities and former NFL players who pointed to this incident as yet another instance of Wentz being “injury prone.” Not to mention a portion of the fan base that feels similarly. Former Eagles defensive end and teammate of Carson on the Super Bowl 52 squad, Chris Long, wasn’t having any of it. Long took to his Twitter on Sunday evening to drag all of the bad takes.

How each Wild Card loser can compete for a Super Bowl in 2020 - PFF
After a season in which he played only 542 snaps and graded well (70.4 coverage grade) prior to an ACL injury, Ronald Darby earned only a 41.0 coverage grade across 506 snaps in 2019. Jalen Mills failed to earn over a 60.0 coverage grade in just under 1,000 coverage snaps the last two years, a year after playing over 1,100 snaps in a Super Bowl-winning 2017 season that earned a 67.2 coverage grade. Rasul Douglas (49.7), Avonte Maddox (57.4), Sidney Jones (68.3 on only 293 snaps), Craig James (41.0) and Cre’Von LeBlanc (69.3 on just 82 snaps) are not offering anything that’s positive EV any time soon. A total and complete overhaul at the cornerback position is likely necessary. There are some cornerbacks to be added via the upcoming draft, but the best opportunity for the Eagles to address this position is to weaken their division rival by signing Byron Jones, who has the type of position and scheme flexibility that should add substantial value to a rebuilding Eagles cornerback group. Without quality players at the cornerback position, the Eagles risk wasting some of the last years of the brilliant Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham, along with the early seasons of the promising Derek Barnett. With competence at the position, their effectiveness could be extended for a few more seasons.

Report: Browns seek permission to interview Jim Schwartz for HC role - Dawgs By Nature
No one can accuse the Cleveland Browns of not exploring all options during the team’s latest head coaching search. On the same day that Mike McCarthy, a presumed favorite for the Cleveland job, was hired to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, the Browns kept their focus on the NFC East Division and have reportedly asked permission to interview Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Seahawks’ victory over Eagles was NBC’s most watched show - Field Gulls
Apparently Sunday afternoon’s Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles wasn’t just a big deal in Seattle. It was a big deal around the country as well. Gregg Bell is reporting that NBC claims the Seahawks vs. Eagles playoff game was one of the biggest ever.

Giants coaching search: Josh McDaniels interview reportedly expected to happen Wednesday - Big Blue View
The New England Patriots’ 20-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans on in AFC wild-card playoff action on Saturday has apparently quickened the pace the of the New York Giants’ search for a new head coach. The Giants had originally been expected to interview New England assistants Josh McDaniels (offensive coordinator) and Joe Judge (special teams coordinator) on Friday. Per the New York Post, those interviews have now been moved up. The Giants are now expected to meet with the perennially sought-after McDaniels on Wednesday and with Judge, a surprise addition to their candidates’ list, on Monday.

The Starting 11: The Cowboys Could Have Hired Anyone, and They Picked Mike McCarthy - The Ringer
The Dallas Cowboys hired Mike McCarthy on Monday morning, and hours later it’s still hard to believe. The jokes here are pretty easy to make, especially after ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that McCarthy had a slumber party at Jerry Jones’s house this weekend. McCarthy was much maligned by the time Green Bay fired him last season, but wisecracks about him and Jerry eating s’mores aside, it’s easy to understand why teams were interested in the veteran coach. McCarthy won 125 games in 13 seasons with the Packers, including a 10-win campaign in 2010 that ended with a Super Bowl victory. For most of his tenure, Green Bay fielded one of the league’s most explosive offenses. Having a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers certainly helps in that regard, but as the Packers’ passing-game struggles this season have shown, Rodgers and his desire to play outside structure may have been more detrimental than some thought at the end of McCarthy’s tenure.

UPDATED: Mike Nolan will be the Cowboys defensive coordinator for Mike McCarthy - Blogging The Boys
Now that Mike McCarthy is the man in charge for the Cowboys, his first task is putting together a quality staff. That usually starts with figuring out who you want for offensive and defensive coordinator. On both those fronts, there has been some speculation coming out about the names Kellen Moore and Mike Nolan. Moore, of course, was the Cowboys offensive coordinator under Jason Garrett last year, and there is some talk that McCarthy could be interested in keeping him. But that is very thin at the moment and nobody should be putting any money down that it will come to fruition, at least just yet. On the other side of the ball, Mike Nolan’s name came up pretty quickly as a defensive coordinator target. McCarthy and Nolan have worked together in the past and could possibly work together again in Dallas. In fact, it appears as if Nolan even thinks that might be the case.

Mike McCarthy has to prove he’s evolved, or else the Cowboys just hired Jason Garrett 2.0 - SB Nation
Mike McCarthy is, reportedly, in as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He brings a legacy of offense-first planning that often topped out at good, but never great. His inability to make in-game changes, evolve as NFL defenses became wise to his schtick, and give his offensive stars the opportunity to maximize their potential ultimately became his legacy in Wisconsin. This may be a problem for Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones. Yes, McCarthy has a Super Bowl win under his belt. But like Garrett, his tenure as longtime head coach of a storied NFL franchise was always defined by the feeling he should have done more. His career as the Packers’ head coach outside that magical 2010 playoff run featured a 6-8 postseason record (.428 winning percentage). Aaron Rodgers’ career peaked over the six years that followed — he won two MVP awards, led the league in passer rating twice, and threw 210 touchdown passes in 88 games — but McCarthy could never get him back to the promised land.
