If you needed a reminder that life’s just not fair, well, look no further than Wentz getting knocked out of his first playoff game after just four pass attempts. It’s so frustrating because he just made it though a 16-game season for the second time in his career. He proved so many doubters wrong by staying healthy and leading the Eagles to the postseason by playing great football down the stretch in December. Wentz getting playoff experience was supposed to be a big positive from this season, regardless of when the Eagles were eliminated. Jadeveon Clowney robbed fans of that silver lining by lauching his helmet into the back of Wentz’s head.

The team should be doing everything they can to trade Alshon Jeffery so that the painful dead money hit he leaves in his wake is minimized. If that means that Jeffery is shipped out along with an asset such as a draft pick in order to coax another team to take on his bad contract, then that option should be on the table. But he has to go. Nelson Agholor very likely played his last game as an Eagle. The team needs to move on. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside cost a second-round pick, but he did not show enough to be viewed as some kind of long-term answer. If the Eagles are honest about their evaluation of his first year in Philly, anything that he gives them going forward should be viewed as a bonus, not an expectation.

They are a part of this game, sure, and many other teams are having the same injuries happen, but it’s something for the team to really look at and understand and improve. Is it the way the team is conditioning? Does the Training Camp plan need to be altered? Should players see more time in the preseason? Less time? Is it equipment-related? There are so many questions here. The Eagles need to find the answers and reduce the number of crippling injuries for 2020.

While they may be a vocal minority, there were a number of media personalities and former NFL players who pointed to this incident as yet another instance of Wentz being “injury prone.” Not to mention a portion of the fan base that feels similarly. Jalen Mills failed to earn over a 60.0 coverage grade in just under 1,000 coverage snaps the last two years, a year after playing over 1,100 snaps in a Super Bowl-winning 2017 season that earned a 67.2 coverage grade. Rasul Douglas (49.7), Avonte Maddox (57.4), Sidney Jones (68.3 on only 293 snaps), Craig James (41.0) and Cre’Von LeBlanc (69.3 on just 82 snaps) are not offering anything that’s positive EV any time soon. A total and complete overhaul at the cornerback position is likely necessary. There are some cornerbacks to be added via the upcoming draft, but the best opportunity for the Eagles to address this position is to weaken their division rival by signing Byron Jones, who has the type of position and scheme flexibility that should add substantial value to a rebuilding Eagles cornerback group. Without quality players at the cornerback position, the Eagles risk wasting some of the last years of the brilliant Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham, along with the early seasons of the promising Derek Barnett. With competence at the position, their effectiveness could be extended for a few more seasons.

The Giants had originally been expected to interview New England assistants Josh McDaniels (offensive coordinator) and Joe Judge (special teams coordinator) on Friday. Per the New York Post, those interviews have now been moved up. The Giants are now expected to meet with the perennially sought-after McDaniels on Wednesday and with Judge, a surprise addition to their candidates’ list, on Monday.

The Dallas Cowboys hired Mike McCarthy on Monday morning, and hours later it’s still hard to believe. The jokes here are pretty easy to make, especially after ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that McCarthy had a slumber party at Jerry Jones’s house this weekend. McCarthy was much maligned by the time Green Bay fired him last season, but wisecracks about him and Jerry eating s’mores aside, it’s easy to understand why teams were interested in the veteran coach. McCarthy won 125 games in 13 seasons with the Packers, including a 10-win campaign in 2010 that ended with a Super Bowl victory. For most of his tenure, Green Bay fielded one of the league’s most explosive offenses. Having a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers certainly helps in that regard, but as the Packers’ passing-game struggles this season have shown, Rodgers and his desire to play outside structure may have been more detrimental than some thought at the end of McCarthy’s tenure.

Now that Mike McCarthy is the man in charge for the Cowboys, his first task is putting together a quality staff. That usually starts with figuring out who you want for offensive and defensive coordinator. On both those fronts, there has been some speculation coming out about the names Kellen Moore and Mike Nolan. Moore, of course, was the Cowboys offensive coordinator under Jason Garrett last year, and there is some talk that McCarthy could be interested in keeping him. But that is very thin at the moment and nobody should be putting any money down that it will come to fruition, at least just yet. On the other side of the ball, Mike Nolan’s name came up pretty quickly as a defensive coordinator target. McCarthy and Nolan have worked together in the past and could possibly work together again in Dallas. In fact, it appears as if Nolan even thinks that might be the case.

Mike McCarthy is, reportedly, in as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He brings a legacy of offense-first planning that often topped out at good, but never great. His inability to make in-game changes, evolve as NFL defenses became wise to his schtick, and give his offensive stars the opportunity to maximize their potential ultimately became his legacy in Wisconsin. This may be a problem for Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones. Yes, McCarthy has a Super Bowl win under his belt. But like Garrett, his tenure as longtime head coach of a storied NFL franchise was always defined by the feeling he should have done more. His career as the Packers’ head coach outside that magical 2010 playoff run featured a 6-8 postseason record (.428 winning percentage). Aaron Rodgers’ career peaked over the six years that followed — he won two MVP awards, led the league in passer rating twice, and threw 210 touchdown passes in 88 games — but McCarthy could never get him back to the promised land.
